Research increasingly shows that Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) has a profound effect on chronic insomnia and works better than drugs and other therapies. Insomnia is the single most commonly reported health problem in adults, and it commonly co-occurs not only with depression but also pain, anxiety, and trauma disorders. When insomnia is addressed, success rates for treating comorbid conditions also improve.
However, non-sleep specialist clinicians frequently lack the training in how to assess, diagnose, and treat insomnia. This two-day workshop is designed for non-sleep specialists who want to customize and adapt CBT-I for clients who have multiple diagnoses.
Day One will focus on sleep problem assessment along with the strategies and tools of CBT-I. Day Two will focus on a case formulation approach that addresses comorbid conditions and complex sleep disorders. This will enable you to sharpen your understanding of sleep regulation and will complement what you may already be doing in the treatment of a co-occuring condition.
In addition to learning how to use case formulation to guide treatment decisions, attendees will learn how to develop suitable schedules for night owls with day jobs, how to work effectively with those with chronic hypnotic medication use, and how to work safely and effectively with those with co-occuring sleep apnea.

*Participants who have already completed an introductory CBT-I workshop are welcome to attend Day 2 for advance training on its own.

- How to do a sleep assessment in a non-sleep specialty setting
- How to teach clients to calculate their optimal time-in-bed prescription and determine their optimal “sleep window”
- Techniques for managing cognitive arousal as well as fatigue
- Avoiding arguing: How to design behavioural experiments that challenge sleep beliefs
- How to build a case formulation during assessment, using eight key questions
- How to adapt treatment to those with multiple comorbidities and medications
